Author, poet, and motivational speaker Lena Arnold was compelled to write this book after viewing a talk show where a male guest, convinced of his own unimportance stated, "Everyday my mother told me she didn't need a man to raise me… I turned out fine without my father and my son will be fine without me!" In this compelling poetic treatise, the author seeks to affirm to men how valuable they are to the development to their children and to the world at large. In an age where women can go to other women for strength, sex, and sustenance, it is understandable that men can become disillusioned and confused concerning their place in the earth. But contrary to what messages the world has sent, men are needed for our nourishment, they are important to our growth, and that they are valuable to our development. For without the presence of strong, competent and loving men– hearts are broken and love often dies.

In the Absence
of My Father Receives 4 Star Book Review
Rating:
4
Author Lena
Fields Arnold delves into the poetic side of herself to unveil what happens when
a father is absent in the life of a young woman. How does his absence affect her
choices, the way she lives, the way she loves? Poetry lovers are in for a
treat!
I’d have to say
my favorite was ‘3rd Grade Report Card’ because there were a lot of
unspoken undertones. It really causes one to think, how much attention do we pay
to the telltale signs written on the walls when children are growing up. When
someone that is on the outside looking in is telling us that something is going
on with our child, do we take the time to investigate? Do we take offense that
someone thinks something is wrong with our child because that might implicate
that something is wrong in our home? These were the first things that came to my
mind when I read this piece which may very well be the reason why it stuck with
me. I do believe that a good poem has the ability to stick with you, make you
think and inspire change.
